Not your average coffee date…Macario decided to pop in for a coffee whilst we were quietly watching the horses grazing at the bottom of the Sanctuary.

Macario is a curious, affectionate and oftentimes silly donkey. He came to us after his owner died, leaving him alone. Although overnight he stays with Barry the donkey, when they are loose to free roam, he prefers his own company. We think he has probably lived alone most of his life and prefers humans to other equines. We think he would climb into the car if he could! 😆

This is super exciting but also extremely urgent. We need to secure the existing Ridge property for the pigs. After securing a larger site to move all of the animals to, we were told the pigs cannot be moved due to new laws surrounding their breed. We can’t continue with the rent and we only have 2 months to raise the money before the property is sold to another buyer. Please help if you can ❤️ If our videos put a smile on your face then pop a little in the pot. If all of our followers across both Facebook and Instagram donated just €1 we would have more than enough to secure the site! Thank you 🙏🏻

Our little pot belly, Broccoli, very suddenly has a bigger pot belly than usual!

We’ve had to wait a couple of weeks for the vet to be available to see her. This isn’t something a pig vet can address on site and only one vet at our regular clinic has experience in treating pigs and often deals with ours when these sorts of situations arise.

An xray showed a mass of sorts but it’s unclear of the origin. She is also full of liquid, which the body is generating as a result, and this is preventing a clear view on the xray. Her bloods are clear except for a slight anemia which is due to her eating less.

She is going to require a CAT scan at a specialist hospital for which we have to wait until Monday to be able to make an appointment. Then we will be able to see exactly where the mass is and if it can be operated on.

In the meantime she is separated with another pig and we are working on keeping her strong with lots of tasty snacks and some iron supplement.
She is likely in a lot of discomfort so we are hoping for a resolution for her as soon as possible, however that looks like.

Yesterday we had to make the difficult decision to let Zorro go after a sudden decline in health. Due to his FIV he couldn’t fight the infection in his mouth and his kidneys had become damaged due to the stress of the body trying to constantly deal with the infections, despite the use of almost constant antibiotics. The only reason his condition wasn’t worse is because of the high level of steroids he was on daily.

We didn’t think it was fair to prolong his suffering. He was constantly hungry but couldn’t eat well because of the ulcers in his mouth and as FIV is incurable, we had to consider his quality of life moving forward.

Although he has only been in our lives for four months since he showed up on the sanctuary in a terrible state, he has made a huge impact. Despite the pain and malnutrition, he was mostly happy and enjoyed lots of attention and affection. We wish we could have had him for longer but we are glad we could offer him a soft place to land in a difficult time and lucky to have known him.

It’s been a long and exhausting week but it seems like the worst of the storm is over and we are very thankful for the sun coming out today. It is starting to dry out the mud and flooding and the animals are catching up on some much-needed sleep after a disruptive week.

Other than the mess the mud and river have caused, we managed to get away without much destruction.

Temperatures are set to drop tonight so we will be replacing sodden bedding to make sure the animals can get dry and warm.

Thank you for your support and help towards costs for feed and bedding. All of our straw for bedding is used up so we’ve been buying wood shavings and we will get a new delivery of hay and straw in a little over a week.

For now we breathe a sigh of relief and rest up a little before the work starts again this evening 💪

Hi all.

On Monday we took Julius to the vets to be sedated and examined. You might remember that 2 years ago he was having difficulty eating and losing weight. Our vet sedated him on site and we discovered a wound under the tongue which we treated with antibiotics and a diet of soft food.

Gradually Julius seemed to recover and put on weight but recently he has been struggling again and we noticed he had an infection in the mouth which we began antibiotics for but he started to struggle more and more with eating.

On Monday our vet took a biopsy and yesterday we received the news that what he has is an aggressive carcinoma: a type of cancer in the tissues under his tongue. Surgery is usually the best option in these cases but often the cancer returns.

We are now awaiting the opinion from the surgeon as to whether or not she thinks this is operable. She already stated, when she had her suspicions of a carcinoma, that there likely wouldn’t be a solution and so we wait for her opinion but with the understanding there might not be anything we can do that would solve the problem whilst giving him a better quality of life.
At the end of the day we will choose the best solution for Julius and will not let him live a life of pain.
Thankfully we are managing to get some food to him at the moment and controlling his pain as much as we can with painkillers.

A new addition to the sanctuary: a river 😅

Although the rain was forecast to be over, we had a massive downpour in the night and river burst its banks again. All animals are safe. Luckily when we built the new pig run, we extended it onto an upper bank so they were able to get to higher ground. The mini horses near the river have been moved.

Someone made silly comment yesterday, shaming us for having a sanctuary next to a river 😆
Just in case anybody was thinking of posting a similar comment- these are extreme weather conditions. The river is dammed and is most of the time dry or just a small stream. It has only ever flooded to this extent once before in the 12 years of being here and that was before it was dammed.

We are thankful that it wasn’t worse. The rain seems to have abated now and according to the forecast the worst is over. Thank you for keeping us on your thoughts ❤️

In the past 24 hours it has not stopped raining for any considerable amount of time. At some point during the night, the river burst its banks and flowed onto the bottom level of the sanctuary, knocking over one of the perimeter fences, dragging gravel, trapping debris in fences and shifting building materials.
Thankfully the level of the river has subsided and the rain is due to stop in a couple of hours until at least Saturday when more is forecast, though not as heavy or constant. Animal areas are muddy and flooded with rainwater.

We’re using any small breaks in the rain to get food and straw to the animals, though it soon gets soaked again.

Yesterday was relatively dry which allowed the flooding to ease a little. Overnight and this morning we’ve been having high winds and constant rain. This caused one of our fences (in much need of replacing) to collapse and for the horses to get out of their paddock during the night, leading to a 3-4am roundup for Julian 💤

The animal runs are totally thick mud. Only two of the horses are using their feed shelter, the donkeys are using theirs. The pig houses are inundated with mud and water and so we’re having to constantly throw down straw to try and keep them dry. The IBC units continue to be the best solution for the pigs in this sort of weather and we are giving extra food to try and help keep everybody warm.
We are dreaming of barns that we can huddle everyone into in situations like these! 🙏🏻

Thankfully everybody is safe and getting through it. A couple of our pigs are going through some health issues at the moment, our senior pig NT who we moved into the horse trailer and Julius who has an issue with his mouth. We’re doing what we can to keep them comfortable.

Thank you to everybody who has been checking in on us. The rain is set to carry on today but as the river subsided a little yesterday, we are hoping we won’t be at risk of much more flooding than we’ve already experienced. Apologies if we are slow on emails at the moment as dealing with this weather (which is not the norm for us here in sunny Spain) is energy-sapping. Hopefully things will return back to normal next week!
